Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Occasionally, your braces or other orthodontic appliances may become loose, bent, or broken. If you experience issues like loose brackets, broken wires, or poking components, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. We cannot accommodate emergency walk-ins for your convenience and to respect other scheduled patients.

Here are some temporary solutions to common appliance-related problems until our team can see you:

  • Irritating Tie Wires: Cover the wire with beeswax or gently push it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
  • Loose Bands or Brackets: Keep the loose component in place and contact our office during patient hours. We’ll schedule an appointment to reattach it if necessary.
  • Broken or Poking Archwires: Use a pencil eraser to bend the wire out of the way or carefully clip the sharp edge with nail clippers. If the issue persists, call us for further assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth—whether or not you are wearing braces—follow these steps:

  1. Apply Ice Immediately: Ice the affected area to reduce swelling.
  2. Contact Your Dentist First: Injuries such as displaced, fractured, or knocked-out teeth often require your family dentist’s attention first. They may perform X-rays or other necessary procedures.
  3. Follow Up with Our Office: If your orthodontic appliances are dislodged or damaged, we will adjust or replace them after your general dentist has addressed the primary injury.
