How To Treat Yourself With Braces

Posted .

If you are new to traditional braces, there are many new food restrictions that can be discouraging. While it is true that you may need to skip that bowl of mixed nuts during cocktail hour, remember that your oral health comes first. But don’t worry–there are still a lot of foods you can eat! Here are some delicious treats and desserts for people with braces.

Chocolate: Lucky for you, chocolate melts easily and does not stick to teeth, making it a great option for people with braces! Dark chocolate is best for mouth health. Avoid mixed filled chocolates, bridge mix, and chocolate-covered nuts, as these all contain fillings that can damage braces. For a fun adventure, try making your own chocolates with braces-friendly fillings.

Fruit: Thinly sliced apples with a little lemon can be a fun, crisp snack at any party. Make sure to make thin slices so you don’t damage your brackets and wires. Try different varieties, such as Honeycrisp or Braeburn. Cotton candy grapes can also be a super-sweet, crisp treat. For an extra-indulgent treat, chocolate-covered strawberries are an elegant crowd-pleaser.

Cake or pies: A show-stopping cake or pie can be a gorgeous centerpiece at a party or dinner and is always a hit with guests. Just be sure to avoid nuts and sticky dried fruit, as they can damage your braces. Instead, try a toasted lemon meringue, a gooey butter cake, or a fruit-and-cream tart. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss extra carefully on the days you eat sugar. For maximum benefit, accompany all desserts with a large glass of water!
